For several months — or perhaps even a couple of years — you may have looked forward to getting your braces removed with eager anticipation. When the day came, however, perhaps your smile did not look like you expected it to. Yes, the teeth were straight, but they might have also looked a little off-color. That is normal; it can happen due to plaque and tartar accumulation, as well as normal dental staining. What can you do to address this issue? Is it okay to undergo teeth whitening after braces in Branford? Read on below to find the answers.

Waiting Is a Wise Move

Braces and other orthodontic treatments subject the teeth to prolonged, continuous force for months on end. Hence, it is normal for teeth to be extra-sensitive at first when braces are removed. Unfortunately, most whitening products have the potential to worsen the sensitivity.

To avoid discomfort, it would be wise to wait for a while before you attempt to whiten your teeth. In fact, most dentists recommend at least a six month break between braces removal and any type of bleaching treatment.

Make Safety a Priority

Anyone who wants to use a teeth whitening product should take appropriate precautions, but this is especially the case with individuals who recently had their braces removed. The heightened sensitivity of your teeth, combined with the chance that your gums may be swollen, means that extra caution should be used.

If you opt for an over-the-counter whitening product, you should not try anything that does not have the approval of the American Dental Association. Also, keep in mind that any trays or strips that you use should fit well. Otherwise, it is more likely that the whitening formula will contact your gums and cause irritation.

It would also be a good idea to talk to your dentist about your whitening options. Even if you do not plan on undergoing a professional treatment, they can still give you tips on how to remove dental stains with as little risk and discomfort as possible.

Your Teeth’s Color May Improve Naturally

During the six months after you get your braces removed, you might find that the color of your teeth naturally improves without any treatment. This can happen as saliva cleans all areas of your teeth, including those that were previous blocked by braces. Additionally, it will be easier for you to stick to a thorough oral hygiene routine; regular brushing and flossing can do much to remove surface stains on your enamel.

There is no need to worry if your teeth look a little lackluster after your braces are removed. With patience, careful oral hygiene, and your dentist’s help, you may soon have a bright, evenly colored smile.
