Often, braces are thought of as a treatment for adolescents, teenagers who already have all or most of their permanent teeth. But you may wonder if it is also possible for younger children to undergo orthodontic treatment. In many cases, yes, it is possible and recommended for kids to get braces with baby teeth in Branford. This blog post discusses the purpose of such treatment and its benefits.

Phase 1 Orthodontics: The Basics

When young children get braces, they are undergoing what is known as phase 1 orthodontics. In many ways, it is similar to orthodontic treatment for older patients. However, there is one major difference: Because the jaws of younger children are not fully developed, and they do not yet have all of their permanent teeth, an orthodontist has an opportunity to guide the development of these important structures.

For example, phase 1 orthodontics may be able to create a wider dental arch, which can allow room for all of the permanent teeth to come in smoothly. It can also increase the chances that the permanent teeth will erupt into their proper places.

Phase 1 treatment usually starts when a child is between 6 and 9 years old. It may last for 6 – 18 months.

Benefits of Phase 1 Orthodontic Treatment

You should have your child evaluated for orthodontic issues by the time they turn 7 years old. If they need to undergo orthodontic treatment, several benefits may result:

  • Healthy oral development. Proper development of the teeth and jaws can contribute to clearer speech, a reduced risk of dental decay, and optimum facial aesthetics.
  • Reduced need for future treatment. Many kids who undergo phase 1 treatment do not need braces later in life. If they do end up requiring phase 2 treatment, it may be relatively simple and fast.
  • Lower chance of surgical intervention. By guiding the development of your child’s teeth and jaws, your dental team can lower the chances that they will require surgery to fix severe orthodontic issues later in life.

What to Expect with Phase 1 Orthodontics

Phase 1 orthodontic treatment may involve braces and other accessories. For example, your child might need a palatal expander to widen the upper dental arch. Whatever the treatment includes, you should be prepared to help your little one comply with all recommended guidelines, including instructions for thorough oral hygiene. You should also expect to visit your dental team periodically so they can monitor your child’s progress. Once your child finishes with phase 1 treatment, it may be a few years before phase 2 begins (if phase 2 is necessary).

Braces with baby teeth can be highly beneficial! If your child has not already undergone an orthodontic evaluation, now is the time to book an appointment for them.
