Happy senior patient talking with her dentist

All-on-4 dental implants offer a streamlined way to replace a full arch of missing teeth. It can produce a strong, highly functional, and long-lasting smile. But the process does require that you undergo surgery. What can you expect as you are recovering? Is there anything you can do to support your body’s healing process? This blog post provides important information.

Average Recovery Timeline

Your recovery time after All-on-4 surgery can vary based on your health, the complexity of your case, and how closely you follow your dentist’s instructions. In most cases, the post-op period goes something like this:

  • During the first 48 – 72 hours, you may experience discomfort and swelling. Although extreme pain is unusual, many patients report that this is the most difficult portion of their recovery.
  • After the first few days, swelling and discomfort should start to subside. You should be able to return to work (if your job does not involve a lot of physical exertion) and ease back into your usual routine.
  • Within 7 – 14 days, many patients are pain-free and have returned to doing most of their normal activities.
  • After 3 – 6 months, your implants should be solidly bonded with your jawbone, and your dental team may replace your temporary All-on-4 denture with a permanent one.

Tips to Facilitate a Smooth Recovery

Your compliance with your care team’s post-op instructions will play a big role in both your comfort and ability to recover efficiently. Here are some general guidelines that many dentists prescribe after All-on-4 surgery:

  • Rest with your head elevated for the first day or two in order to reduce swelling.
  • Use cold compresses as directed to manage discomfort and swelling.
  • Choose soft, nutrient-rich foods, such as yogurt, scrambled eggs, mashed potatoes, smoothies, and brothy soups that are not too hot.
  • Avoid straws, smoking, alcohol, and hard or crunchy foods until your dentist approves them.
  • Keep your mouth clean with the rinse or hygiene routine that your dentist recommends. You will need to be gentle but thorough around your surgical sites.
  • Take pain medication exactly as instructed.

When to Call Your Dentist

A degree of discomfort is normal after All-on-4 surgery, but certain symptoms are red flags that should prompt a call to your care team. Seek help right away if:

  • The pain gets worse or does not start to subside after a few days.
  • You develop a fever or other signs of infection, such as pus or a persistent bad taste.
  • Your temporary denture is interfering with your bite.

Even if you are not sure if there is anything wrong, you should still feel free to contact your dentist if you have questions about how to care for yourself during your post-op period.

Recovering from All-on-4 surgery is not as intimidating as most people expect! Talk to your care team to learn more about the road ahead.
