Dentures can provide you with years of reliable oral function and improved chewing ability. However, they do have a limited lifespan. On average, patients need to swap out their prosthetic for a new one every 5 – 7 years. Is it time to replace your dentures? This blog post touches on five signs that you should talk to your dentist about the possibility.

Your Dentures Feel Loose

When your natural teeth are extracted, your jawbone begins to lose some of its mass. Over time, its shape can be significantly affected. In turn, this can have an impact on the way your dentures fit. They may feel loose and easily slip around in your mouth.

Your dentist can periodically reline (adjust) your prosthetic so it continues to be snug and comfortable. However, there will come a point when a reline will not be adequate. You will need to get an entirely new set of teeth.

Your Dentures Are No Longer Comfortable

After you adapt to your dentures, you should be able to wear them all day without any serious discomfort. If you find that your prosthetic teeth are causing you pain or even leading to gum sores, you should certainly visit your dentist. Your dentures might be damaged, or their fit may have changed so much that they can no longer do their job properly.

It Is Difficult to Eat and Speak

Once you get used to using your dentures, you should be able to speak clearly and eat easily while they are in your mouth. If you find that your teeth often slip out of place when you are eating, or you need to use more adhesive than you did in the past, you may need to consult with your dentist. Speech problems while wearing your denture could also indicate that it is time to part ways with it.

There are Visible Signs of Damage or Discoloration

A damaged denture brings an increased risk of gum sores and other types of damage to your oral tissues, and a significantly discolored denture could negatively affect your confidence. Do not try to correct these issues on your own; you could end up worsening the problem. Instead, visit your dentist to see if they can get your teeth back in working order. If they cannot, you might need a new denture.

You Are Ready for an Upgrade

Perhaps there is nothing wrong with your current denture. However, you might still want to replace it with a stabler, longer-lasting option. Ask your dentist if you are a candidate for implant dentures, which are anchored in the mouth via small titanium cylinders that act as prosthetic tooth roots. Implant dentures have an enduring fit, are incredibly strong, and offer many other advantages that their conventional counterparts lack.

Should you replace your dentures? Talk to your dentist for guidance. You may soon have a brand-new smile!
